Bomb craters on Nazi airdrome. Bombs dropped by planes of the Eighth U.S. Air Force did this damage to the German airdrome, west of Munich, destroying a large repair hangar and inflicting heavy damage on the barracks area and landing facilities, in an attack July 19, 1944. Ranging over Germany from the Baltic to the Alps, 12,000 planes of the 8th and 15th U.S. Air Forces smashed more than 100 targets in Germany, dropping more than 16,000 tons of bombs, in the six days ending July 22, 1944.
