Hundreds die of starvation in Holland.
winter 1945
Hundreds die of starvation in Holland. A little Dutch child (left) eats from a tin of relief food that she is sharing with her companion. Twelve hundred persons died of starvation in Amstedam, Holland, when the Germans destroyed the country's dikes and flooded Dutch farms with seawater. Before the Allies liberated the Low Countries, American military authorities sent more than 2.150 B-17 Flying Fortresses to drop 2.500 tons of food to the starving populace. When the Germans were pushed back, land vehicles and ships rushed food to Holland, reducing, and finally checking, the deaths.
