Before the Germans flooded the land small dikes were built in order to keep the sea water on the fields, in the same manner as they were formerly made to keep it out. Thousands of Dutchmen were forced to labor on this destructive work. Heavy cart horses are ridden along the tops of these dikes to harden them by tramping down the earth.
