Augsburg Messerschmitt factory bombed. Tossed on its nose, this Me-109 is a monument to the 'Unknown Battle' of February, 1944, when strategic bombing by the Eighth U.S. Air Force stopped the rising tide of German fighter production by blasting Messerschmitt parant plant at Augsburg, Germany, and other vital plane installations. Wreckage of other aircraft litters the Augsburg airdrome. Bombed six times by the Eighth U.S. Air Force, the Augsburg Messerschmitt plant was the center of new development work for Me planes. It also produced all types of Messerschmitts-109s, 110s, 210s and 410s. Production was cut 50 per cent for more than 30 days after the first daylight attack Fabruary 25, 1944- one of the big innings in the Unknown Battle of Germany'. The plant never was restored to full capacity. The last attack was made by the RAF and the Eighth Air Force November 4, 1944.
