Ninth U.S. Army takes 1,400 prisoners, first day of new drive. Nazi prisoners are collected following their capture February 23, 1945, when the Ninth U.S. Army crossed the Roer River at the start of a new offensive into the Cologne plain. The U.S. troops stormed 15 villages and took 1,400 prisoners during the first 24 hours of an advance along a 22-mile front.
