U.S. Fighter hits ammunition truck.
U.S. Fighter hits ammunition truck. Exploding bombs and ammunition light up the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bomber of the U.S. Army Ninth Air Force that made a direct hit on a German ammunition truck in France. The picture was taken by the automatic camera of an accompanying P-47. Despite the flaming debris, the pilot flew safely through the shower of debris and returned to his base. In one day's operation over France, on Aug. 9, 1944, Eight Air Force Mustangs, Thunderbolts and Lightnings destroyed or damaged more than 1,000 freight cars, 60 locomotives, 58 motor trucks, 43 additional trucks on railway flatcars, 15 German staff cars, a number of oil tanks, anti-aircraft towers and river boats and barges.
