Two thousand U.S. planes shatter Berlin. The skies over Berlin teem with American Flying Fortresses as a force o 2,000 bombers and fighters under the United States Strategic Air Forces'command hammered military targets in Germany's capital city with 10,000 high explosive bombs and 350,000 incendiaries, weighing more than 1,500 tons, in the largest daylight attack ever carried out against a single target area. Major objectives of the assault, on March 8, 1944, were the ball bearing plant at Erkner, a southeatern suburb, and other industrial plants in the Berlin area.
