U.S. soldiers examine captured German vehicle in Normandy. American soldiers inspect a tractor jeep which the Germans were forced to abandon under the pressure of superior U.S. forces on the Cotentin Peninsula of France. In spite of German attempts to hold their ground - even at the highest cost - Allied assault troops liberated the peninsula, the deep-water port of Cherbourg, the inland seaport of Caen, the important communication center of La Haye du Puits and scores of Norman villages. Confronted by simultaneous Allied drives in France, Italy and on the Russian front, the enemy was unable to resist the steadily increasing pressure that is constricting him.
