Captured "flying bombs" base.
Captured "flying bombs" base. "Ski" buildings on a "flying bomb" projection site, captured by American troops on the Cherbourg Peninsula were to be constructed on this curved road. In the foreground are rails, stacked ready for laying on the launching ramp. The "ski" building, so called because it looks like a ski on its side, is believed to have been designed to store pilotless aircraft and has a curved entrance to protect it from blast. This site, was still under construction when it was captured. It is now used as a forward command post by U.S. troops.
