In offensive sweeps challenging the enemy fleet to combat, U.S. Navy carrier task forces attacked enemy bases on Marcus Island, Wake Island and Rabaul, New Britain Island in the Sout Pacific. In the later attack on November 11, 1943, U.S. planes destroyed a Japanese cruiser and a destroyer, damaged 12 other enemy warships and shot down 88 Japanese planes. The greatest carrier force over assembled has been concentrated in the Pacific area by the U.S. Navy in its hunt for the Japanese fleet.
