NEW U.S. CARGO PLANE LEAVES ASSEMBLY LINE. Workers of the Fairchild aircraft corporation in the U.S. southeastern state of Maryland push a C-82 Packet onto the field from the assembly line. This huge new U.S. Army plane has a cargo capacity of 2,312 cubic feet (64,73 cu. meters), or 88 per cent as much as a standard railroad boxcar. Its square fuselage, with straight sides, level floor and two huge rear doors, is designed for easy loading. Its floor is the same height as a truckbed, which enables the easy transfer of cargo from a truck to the plane. Motor vehicle can be driven aboard the C-82 under their own power. The Packet's two 2,100-horsepower engines give it a range of 3,500 miles (5,600 km.).
