American soldiers erect huts for bombed-out Londoners.
American soldiers erect huts for bombed-out Londoners. American soldiers build a hut on a bombed site in Loughborough-road, Brixton, South London. These pictures are a few of the three thousand U.S. troops who have been lent to Britain to help repair London's bomb damage and to help solve the housing problem. Private Berlin Jones (left) of Decator, Alabama and Private John Geer of Columbus, South Carolina, fit the window section of a hut, while other men complete the asbestos roofing. Nine days after they started work, the contingent of U.S. Amry combat engineers completed the first hut at Birxton, South London. Plumbers, electricians and carpenters of the unit hope to complete the interior fittings of the hut within a few hours, while unskilled men commence the building of others. The huts, asbestos-lined against weather, are built to laste for two years.
