6 juni 1944
American infantrymen ready. Two American infantrymen, their fighting spirit typified in their faces, are shown as they left in their troopship for the first landings in France. Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Force, Allied forces began landing on the north coast of France June 6, 1944. Four thousand ships, supported by smaller craft, and 11,000 aircraft took part in the invasion. General Eisenhower in his order of the day said: "We will accept nothing less than full victory".
