Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1.
Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1. Segeant Dick Wingert of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, draws his famous cartoon character, "Hubert". This pudgy little soldier is one of the most beloved wrong-footed GI of the U.S. Army. "Hubert", who has been everything from an officer to a hapless "sad sack"and has been in every branch of the Army but the WAG, is as popular with ETO soldiers as are Sergeant Bill Mauldin's crimy, unshaven doughboys. When Wingert gets his discharge (he came in four years ago at 22 from an Indianapolis art school), he says he expects to give "Hubert"a discharge as well and make a civilian out of the character. Unlike Mauldin and Lieutenant Dave Breger, whose cartoon, "Private Breger", also appears in "Stars and Stripes", Wingert's matreial is not syndicated but he has a postwar offer from the Chicago Sun Syndicate. A book of Wingert's best has been published, however.
