U.S. Soldier receives blood plasma for starvation.
U.S. Soldier receives blood plasma for starvation. Private Raymond Miller of Chicago, Illinois, freed prisoner of the Germans, receives his 11th unit of blood plasma to counteract starvation at a base field hospital in Normandy, France. The plasma is being administered by Lieutenant Edwin Bovill of Grosse Point, Michigan, and Lieutenant Ruby Brenden of Bismark, North Dakota. Army surgeons say that, without blood plasma, Miller and many thousands of other freed prisoners in advanced stages of starvation would not have survived. Private Miller, a field artillertymen, and other captured American soldiers were subjected to a 700-mile forced march to their prison camp in German. Ninety-seven of the group died on route. Private Miller survived the gruelling march but still suffered from severe malnutrition caused by the starvation diet he received.
