American sailors take over German submarine.
American sailors take over German submarine. The American Flag flies aft of the coming tower on the U-858, first German submarine to strike its colors to U.S. forces since Germany's unconditional surrender to the Allies was proclaimed on May 8, 1945. Members of an American boarding party who dismantled the vessel's guns and ran up the U.S. Flag are on the dock of the U-boat and in the small boat at its side. This formal surrender took place May 14, 1945, off Cape May, a small port in the U.S. east coast state of New Jersey. On May 10, the 740-ton craft had surfaced and flashed a surrender signal 300 miles (482 kms.) south of Newfoundland. It was escorted to rendezvous on May 14, by two destroyer escorts of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
