American Merchant Marine delivers large share of war goods. U.S. merchant seamen secure a tank to the deck of their ship. It may be bound over any ocean to any battlefront. This may go in with any invasion or supply an advance. The great bulk of all shipments from the United States is carried by the nation's Merchant Marine, as is shown in the chart (upper right) accounting for the 78,474,000 (M) tons of cargo which left the country in 1944. The dry cargo carried by such vessels would fill 8,000 liberty ships or 2,000,000 (M) railway freight cars. Bulk liquid carried would fill more than 1,700 standard tankers or 600,000 standard railway tank cars.
