U.S. aircraft carrier strikes German shipping in Norwegian waters. The U.S. aircraft carrier Ranger, whose planes sank German ships in Norwegian water, cruises in the Atlantic, as an escorting U.S. destroyer (background) guards the 14,500-ton vessel against enemy submarines. During October, 1943, planes from the Ranger, operating at the time with a British task force, sank at least six German vessels, totaling 40,000 tons and including four merchant ships, a tanker and an oil barge; damaged other ships, and shot down two enemy planes during a raid on German shipping in waters off the Norwegian Coast.
