French Admiral opens first naval headquarters in Normandy. Rear Admiral Georges Thierry dÁrgenlieu Commander-in-Chief of French Naval Forces in the United Kingdom, seated at his desk in the first French naval headquarters in liberated France, talks with his Chief of Staff. One of the first to enlist under General Charles de Gaulle, Admiral dÁrgenlieu made his way to England in June, 1940, after escaping from a prison convoy to Germany. He was a naval veteran of the last war and joined the Carmelite Order in 1920. He was Provincial of Paris when he was mobilized in August, 1939.
