German submarine captured by U.S. Navy ships off West Africa.
German submarine captured by U.S. Navy ships off West Africa. A towline is secured on the bow of the captured submarine by members of the Navy boarding party. The towline was then made fast to the U.S.S. Guadalcanal which towed the U-505 for four days until a Navy tugboat arrived to take over the 2,500-mile (4,000 kms.) haul to the Navy operating base at Bermuda. The enemy craft is still awash amidships but the Navy personnel have succeeded in preventing further flooding and have hoisted the American Flag on the conning tower mast.
