First U.S. planes land in Russia. Flying Fortresses peel off to land at a U.S. Strategic and Tactical Air Forces field in the USSR after attacking targets in German-occupied Europe. Other Fortresses have already landed and crews are being welcomed by high-ranking American and Soviet military leaders upon completion of the first shuttle mission, which had for its target a marshalling yard just back of the German-Russian front. Establishment of U.S. bases on Soviet territory, which arose from the decisions of the Moscow and Teheran Conferences, increases the scope of shuttle bombing of Nazi Europe. Areas which have been practically outside the range of Allied bombers based in Italy, North Africa and Britain can now be struck with full loads of bombs, including the places to which the Germans evacuated many of their industries and plants.
