U.S. and Russian flyers meet at new American base in Soviet Union. American and Soviet airmen exchange greetings at a base, built in Russia for U.S. aircraft, where American bombers landed for the first time on June 2, 1944. U.S. Flying Fortresses, escorted by Russian Yak fighters and American Mustangs, made the history-making landings after bombing German targets in Bucharest, capital of Rumania. Four days later, on June 6, 1944, the American bombers, blasted enemy targets in Galats, chief import port of Rumania, flying from and returning to their Soviet bases. The new operations to and from Russia emphasize the close cooperation of the Allies and demonstrate that war plants in eastern Germany and German-held Eastern Europe vulnerable to the same type of heavy bombings which have crippled the enemy's battle industries in Western Europe.
