Wreckage of German ships at Italian port.
Wreckage of German ships at Italian port. The habor of Civitavecchia, Italian port city 40 miles northwest of Rome, presents a picture of desolation, with hulks of wrecked German ships lining the demolished quays. The Allied Fifth Army entered Civitavecchia on June 8, 1944, four days after the liberation of Rome.. Ships in the harbor either were wrecked by Allied bombs or by German demolition squads. By June 20, the Allied Fifth and Eight Armies had pursued the retreating enemy troops to a point 100 miles northwest of Rome.
