U.S. Liberty ships bring food to liberated Italian city.
U.S. Liberty ships bring food to liberated Italian city. Italian workmen on the docks of Naples, Italy, unload sacks of white flour from a U.S. Liberty ship into an Allied Military Government truck. The AMG, in co-operation with local Italian officials, distributes food and other supplies to the civilian populace in liberated territory. Harbor installations destroyed by the Germans at Naples were repaired so effectively that months afver the city's liberation, all records for gross tonnage handled in the harbor were broken. The Germans seized or destroyed 90 per cent of Naples' food supplies, and the city was threatened with starvation before it was liberated by the Allied Fifth Army on October 1, 1943.
