Allies rebuild harbor of Civitavecchia.
Allies rebuild harbor of Civitavecchia. Reconstruction work on the dock (left) continues as an American LST (landing ship tank) vessel nudges up to the beach at the harbor of Civitavecchia to disgorge supplies and equipment for Allied troops in the area. Shortly after the Germans were forced to retreat from Rome, U.S. Army engineers, aided by Italians, started rebuilding the port facilities of Civitavecchia, one of the Italian capital's harbors. Similar Allied reconstruction of the harbors of Naples, Italy, and Tripoli in North Africa enabled these ports to handle a greater tonnage than in peacetime.
