America at war. U.S. soldiers live and fight in countries throughout the world. A U.S. Soldier and Companian in Australia - A U.S. soldier carrying a gun accompanies an Australian soldier on a patrol in the desert stretches of western Australia. After the Allied loss of the Dutch East Indies and the naval base at Singapore, early in 1942, Japanese planes pounded Port Darwin, northern port of Australia, and threatened a land invasion of the island continent. The arrival of U.S. reinforcements in ever increasing numbers during the Spring and Summer of that year not only helped to forestall such an invasion but those same forces carried the war into enemy-held territory, liberating group after group of islands, culminating with the Island of Leyte, in the Philippines, and the successful landings on Luzon on January 9, 1945.
