Japanese ship goes to bottom during U.S. naval attack on Carolines. Survivors of a Japanese vessel swim through the spreading oil slick and debris as their doomed ship dives toward the bottom after being blasted by American planes during a U.S. naval task force attack on enemy bases in the Western Carolines Surface units and carrier-based planes of the powerful American task force sank or damaged 46 enemy ships, destroyed 160 Japanese planes, probably destroyed 54 more and wiped out many installations and docks on the enemy bases.
