Lieutenant Kakuzo Sida commanded the combined prison camp and intelligence center at Ofuna, Japan, American airmen taken prisoner were beaten, whipped and clubbed at the xcamp in an exfort to wring military secrets from them. Prisoners lived on a starvation diet, were over-worked and received inadequate midical treatment, although many suffered from chronic cases of beri beri, dysentery and other ailments arising from malnutrition and neglect. Allied prisiners released after Japan's capitulation on August 14, 1945, told of the brutality and torture at the Japanese prisoner of war camps.
