Laval surrenders to Americans. Madame Pierre Laval, wife of the former Premier of the Vichy regime during the German occupation of France, smiles after her arrival at the Horsching Airport in Linz, Austria, July 31, 1945. She flew with her husband in a German plane, piloted by two German aviators, from Barcelona Spain, to the American zone of occupation where her husband surrendered himself to U.S. authorities. The American immediately turned the former Premier and his wife over to French officials in their zone. The Lavals were flown to Paris August I, and were rushed to Fresnes prison at the edge of the city.
