De zogeheten Ledo Road werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebouwt door de geallieerden als alternatief voor de Burma Road. Vanaf 1945 wordt deze route aangeduid met de naam Stilwell Road (naar de Amerikaanse generaal Joseph Stilwell. Het originele bijschrift luidt: 'Chinese truck convoy rolls along Ledo Road. Laden with roadbuilding supplies, a convoy of Chinese motor trucks winds along a completed section of the new Ledo Road in North Burma, headed for an advanced area where U.S. Army Engineers are pushing the vital supply route from India into Burma. In spite of sharp curves, heavy rains, monsoons, blinding clouds of dust and frequent clashes with Japanese, these overland convoys continue to move up large quantities of supplies and equipment for Chinese and American forces fighting the enemy in Northern Burma.'
