The rise and fall of the Nazi state. Part II: Infiltration and 'Lawful' Aggression. Austrian Chancellor Speaks Before Parliament dr. Kurt Schuschnigg, Chancellor of Austria, speaks before Parliament in February, 1938, after assuming that post at the assassination of former Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss by the Austrian Nazis. Schuschnigg attempted to prevent the German seizure of Austria but scarcely a month later, Nazi forces marched into a country made impotent against the aggressor by Austrian Nazy Party members, who secretly secured key positions and prevented the mobilization of resistance. In order to make the 'Anschluss' seem legal, a plebiscite was held four weeks later by the new Nazi regime. Openly controlled by party members, the voting was reported to show that 99,75 per cent of the Austrians approved of the union with Germany.
