Madame Chiang Kai-Shek visits home for Chinese war orphans.
2 september 1945
Madame Chiang Kai-Shek visits home for Chinese war orphans. Madame Chiang Kai-Shek (center), wife of the Chinese President, is escorted up the steps of the new home for Chinese war orphans near Chungking, the wartime capital of China, to attend ceremonies marking the opening of the institution. The little girls in light dresses, lining the steps to accord her the Girl Scout salute, are some of the millions of Chinese children who roamed half-starved over the countryside of China, after the Japanese had devastated their homes. Madame Chiang's escorts are matrons at the home.
