"Wir waren eine glückliche Familie--" : zur Geschichte und den Schicksalen der Juden in Salzwedel/Altmark
Surveys the history of the Jews in Salzwedel from their first settlement there in the 13th century until World War II. Pp. 50-83 trace the fate of some Jewish families between 1920-33, noting the increasing antisemitism. Pp. 83-146 deal with events between 1933-42, mentioning Nazi legislation, Aryanization, persecution, and deportation. In 1942 the 15 remaining Jews in Salzwedel were deported. In 1944 a satellite of the Neuengamme concentration camp was established in Salzwedel, where 1,200 Hungarian Jewish women did forced labor at a munitions factory. Mentions several non-Jews who helped their Jewish neighbors to escape. Includes bibliographical references (pages 150-151). 164 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm
