Günzburg und der Fall Josef Mengele : die Heimatstadt und die Jagd nach dem NS-Verbrecher
For many years Mengele was considered the most wanted war criminal worldwide. In 1958 a warrant for his arrest was released, without result. In the course of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial the broader public became aware of his misdeeds. Mengele had escaped in 1949 to South America, with the presumed assistance of his influential family in Günzburg, Swabia, whose social and economic leading position nourished the "Günzburg myth": the perception that the whole village was involved in a plot to protect the elusive mass murderer. Mengele was never caught. Includes bibliographical references (pages 195-205) and index. 211 pages ; 24 cm.
