Immigration, antisémitisme et racisme en France, XIXe-XXe siècle : discours publics, humiliations privées
A study of immigration to France, emigration to the colonies, and the evolution of the right of asylum. Examines French public discourse on the subject and stereotypes attached to immigrants since the 19th century as a background to the development of antisemitism and racism. Ch. 4 (pp. 207-286), "L'affaire Dreyfus et la stigmatisation des origines", deals with Édouard Drumont's "La France juive" and its reception; the politicization of antisemitism and the resurrection of the republican right; the fight against stigmatization in the public space; Émile Zola, Maurice Barrès, and Marcel Proust and the Affair; and the consequences of the Affair. Pp. 433-456, "Le retour du problème juif", trace antisemitism in the 1930s and the beginning of the immigrants' moves to organize collective defense (the Communist Party, MOI, and the Ligue internationale contre l'antisémitisme). Pp. 677-683 discuss antisemitism and racism in France today, as well as the effects of the radicalization of social discourse and criminalization of popular language on the fight against these two forms of xenophobia. Includes bibliographical references and index. 717 pages ; 24 cm
