In 1919 the party joined the Communist International and became the Bulgarian Communist Party. Since 1924 it acted illegally. In 1927 communists created the legal Workers' Party. In 1938 both parties (legal and illegal) were unified under the name of Bulgarian Workers' Party. Since 1945 the official party name was Bulgarian Workers' Party (communists), and in 1948 the party returned to its previous name (Bulgarian Communist Party).
