Nejvyšší správní soud, Praha

The Supreme Administrative Court in Prague, with jurisdiction over the whole of Czechoslovakia, was established on the basis of Act No. 3/1918 Coll. of 2 November 1918. The Act defined only the organisational principles; its activities were based on the wording of the old Austrian laws. The court specialised in assessing the legality of decisions of administrative bodies, mainly of a civil nature, and was only exceptionally called upon to review defective laws. Further amendments and additions were introduced by Act No 164/1937 Coll. of 16 June 1937. During the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the Supreme Administrative Court's decision-making often concerned the application of anti-Jewish laws. After the war, the Court's activities could not be resumed in full, inter alia due to the existence of the administrative court in Bratislava. The double-track nature of the administrative judiciary was removed by Act No. 166/1949 Coll. of 11 May 1949, which transferred the seat of the Supreme Administrative Court to Bratislava. However, the dissolution of the Administrative Court had been in preparation since February 1948, and its liquidation took place on 30 October 1952 by Constitutional Act No. 64/1952 Coll. The Bureau's files may relate to civil service matters. In addition to legislative records, the Bureau also maintains all significant internal organizational materials that reflect the staffing, management, and operations of the Supreme Administrative Court. The actual court decisions may be of great value. Documents relating directly to Jews can also be found in the files - information on the placement of Jews in Terezín, the indebtedness of Jewish property and its confiscation, orders to vacate apartments, cancellation of lease contracts; as well as information on the statutes of Jewish communities and their property, complaints against decisions in matters of citizenship, residence, eviction, dissolution of Jewish religious communities, etc.
