Pre-death legacy Johannes Warlo

In 2013, the Fritz Bauer Institute acquired the pre-death legacy of chief prosecutor Johannes Warlo including comprehensive records from his work at the attorney general's office in Frankfurt (Main). The pre-death legacy mostly documents Warlo's investigation into Nazi violent crimes, especially into the so-called euthanasia. Johannes Warlo was born in Gleiwitz in Upper Silesia in 1927. Before finishing school, he was conscripted to the Kriegsmarine as an officer candidate. In 1945, he was a British prisoner of war for a few months. Then, he took an extra course for high-school graduates and passed the Abitur. Starting in 1947, he studied law in Marburg. After passing his first state examination in 1951, he completed his legal preparatory service at several Hessian courts. Therewith, he passed his second state examination. Starting in April 1956, he worked for the Hessian civil service for example for the prosecution at Limburg and Wiesbaden. He was especially concerned with economic cases. Starting in June 1961, Johannes Warlo worked for the attorney general's office at the Landgericht Frankfurt (Main). Attorney General Fritz Bauer entrusted him with the investigation into the Nazi "euthanasia" program. For example, Warlo investigated leading employees of the "Aktion T4" and physicians at the euthanasia facilities. He also drafted the indictment against perpetrators involved in the killing of concentration camp prisoners in order to compile the "Strasbourg collection of skulls". Later, Johannes Warlo was an advisor for international legal assistance and extradition. Since July 1992, he has retired. The pre-death legacy Johannes Warlo covers after description, demetallization, and filing 51 archival units with a total extent of 2 running meters. The processor Sophia Steinmetz completely reorganized the holding during indexing from November to December 2020. The archives group is now structured in nine sections: "correspondence" ("Korrespondenzen"), "juridical literature" ("Juristische Fachliteratur"), "proceedings against Kurt Borm, Aquilin Ullrich, Heinrich Bunke and Klaus Endruweit (Ks 1/66 GStA)", "proceedings against Horst Schumann (Ks 2/70 GStA)", "proceedings against Hans-Joachim Becker and Friedrich Robert Lorent (Ks 1/69 GStA)", "proceedings against Bruno Beger and others (Js 8/66 GStA)", "further proceedings" ("Weitere Verfahren"), "miscellaneous" ("Sonstiges") and "proceedings against Reinhold Vorberg and Dietrich Allers (Js 20/61 GStA) (Ks 2/66 GStA)". The section "correspondence" ("Korrespondenzen") covers the professional correspondence of Johannes Warlo. The section "juridical literature" ("Juristische Fachliteratur") contains publications on the jurisdiction and expert reports concerning proceedings regarding Nazi violent crimes (NSG-Verfahren) and euthanasia trials. The section "proceedings against Kurt Borm, Aquilin Ullrich, Heinrich Bunke and Klaus Endruweit (Ks 1/66 GStA)" addresses the prosecution of four physicians involved in the so-called euthanasia program. It is subdivided into the two later independent trials the "proceedings against Kurt Borm (Ks 1/66 GStA)" and "proceedings against Aquilin Ullrich, Heinrich Bunke, and Klaus Endruweit (Ks 1/66 GStA)". The section "proceedings against Horst Schumann (Ks 2/70 GStA)" also concerns the participation of the incriminated physician Horst Schumann in euthanasia practices and medical experiments. The sections "proceedings against Hans-Joachim Becker and Friedrich Robert Lorent (Ks 1/69 GStA)" and "proceedings against Reinhold Vorberg and Dietrich Allers (Js 20/61 GStA) (Ks 2/66 GStA)" contain documents from the proceedings against the administration of the euthanasia. The section "proceedings against Bruno Beger and others (Js 8/66 GStA)" consists of documents regarding the proceedings against Bruno Beger and others. They were charged for the murder of concentration camp prisoners in order to compile a skeleton collection. The section "further proceedings" ("Weitere Verfahren") covers individual proceedings concerning Nazi violent crimes (NSG-Verfahren) and euthanasia trials. The section "miscellaneous" ("Sonstiges") contains various records regarding Warlo's legal work.
