Estate of Ilse von Twardowski-Conrat, in the Archive of the City of Munich, 1898-1942

Painter Ilse Beate von Twardowski was born in Vienna on 20/01/1880. Her parents, who converted to Christianity in 1852, had her baptized to Christianity (Evangelist) when she was a baby. She received her art training in Brussels. She married Ernst von Twardowski in 1910 and moved in his footsteps from Rome to Munich in 1914. During the Nazi regime, she was forbidden to work in her profession due to her Jewish origin, and in 1936 she was expelled from the Reichskammer für bildende Künste. She committed suicide on 09 August 1942 in order to escape deportation. A square in the city of Munich was named after her later on: the Ilse-vonTwardowski-Platz.

The Collection includes personal documents, excerpts of memoirs which she wrote about her life, correspondence (including with various artists, her family members and her daughter Elisabeth) and condolence letters that were sent to her daughter after her mother's death. File no. 17 of the Collection has letters that were sent to Elisabeth from German financial institutions regarding the confiscation of her mother's property after her death, and a letter sent by the community in Munich in November 1945, confirming that her mother was listed in the Reichsvereinigung card file and regarding her suicide.
