The Commission on the history of the defense of Moscow was created in December 1941, by the initiative of the Secretary of the Central Committee, MK and MGK VKP (b) A.S. Shcherbakova at the Moscow Committee of the VKP (b) was created. At the head was appointed head of the Department of Agitation and Propaganda of the Central Committee of the CPSU (B.) G. Aleksandrov, a famous historian, a major specialist in the history of Soviet society, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences I.I. Mintz became his deputy. On January 15, 1942 it was renamed as the Commission on the History of the Great Patriotic War. In the summer of 1942, the leadership of the commission was changed. I.I. Mints became a chairman, I.M. Acceleration - his deputy, A.A. Belkin - the scientific secretary. In December 1942, the commission acquired the status of a state organization in the system of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Commissions for the collecting materials on the history of the war were also created under the Central Committee of the Komsomol, People's commissariats, in the army and navy, in the regions, territories, and republics. In 1943 - 1944 such commissions were created in liberated areas. The commission's task was to collect sources on the history of the war, including testimonies of partisans, rear front workers, materials about the Heroes of the Soviet Union, documents depicting the activities of scientists, writers, and artists, etc. But soon this restriction was removed and the collection of sources became comprehensive. The second goal was to publish the materials received, primarily to promote the heroism of Soviet soldiers and partisans. The third task was the publication of researches on the history of the defense of Moscow. As one of the central goals, the task was set of compiling the stories of individual military units and militias. The fifth task was to create a chronicle of World War II in the national republics and regions of the country. Finally, the Commission had to compile an encyclopedia of the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War. In 1945, with the end of the war, it was decided to dissolve the commission. Section I - “History of military units and divisions” 259 inventories, including 1802 units of storage. The section contains a variety of materials on the activities of the armies, divisions, regiments participating in the battles: the history of military units, operational documents (orders, orders, reports, reports, reports and logs of military operations, combat operations schemes), transcripts of conversations with commanders and ordinary soldiers which reflects their immediate impressions and experiences, memories of the war participants, letters, literary works of soldiers, folklore material.
