Selected records of the State Archive in Levoča
Copyright Holder: Slovakia. Ministerstvo vnútra Following World War II, trials of Nazi criminals and their collaborators were organized on the territory of restored Czechoslovakia. A three-tiered retributive justice system was established in the Slovak part of post-WWII Czechoslovakia by Regulation of the Slovak National Council no. 33/1945 on the “Punishment of Fascist Criminals, Occupants, Traitors and Collaborators and on the Establishment of People’s Judiciary.” District People’s Courts (Okresný ľudový súd) were established at district seats with jurisdiction over the territory of specific districts; this represented the second tier within the system of retributive justice in Slovakia. Within their jurisdiction fell all criminal offenses stipulated by Regulation No. 33/1945, with the exception of cases under the exclusive jurisdiction of the National Court (which tried only the leading officials of former Slovak Republic, 1939-1945). Selected records of the post-war trials and investigative cases of the District People's Courts and the Local People's Courts pertaining to Slovaks and former Hlinka guard members accused of collaborating with the German security forces. Includes the trial records of individual Slovaks accused of denouncing their Jewish neighbors, the trial records of regional Hlinka Guard commanders responsible for the deportation of local Jews, as well as the trial records of major political defendants. Also consists of wartime files of the local gendarmerie stations pertaining to the arrest and roundup of local Jews (1940-1944), and trial records from the Regional Court in Levoča (1939-1944).
