Jakovas (Jacob Josef) Bunka (1923-2014) was born in Plungė, Lithuania, to Leib (1895-1943) and Toybe Ril Bunka. Jakovas had three sisters, Dina, Hene, and Chane, and one brother, Avrom Lazar. His father fought for Lithuanian independence after World War I, and was awarded a Freedom medal and some land to work. Roughly half the town’s population of 5,000 were Jewish.
