Martyred U.S. airmen.
Martyred U.S. airmen. This is the body of one of the three American airmen who crashed near Lochtum, Germany, approximately 32 miles northwest of Nordhausen, in May, 1944. Liberated Polish slave workers testified that the Americans were marched through the streets of the town by Nazi police, were stoned by the people and then shot. The Judge Advocate Section, War Crimes Branch of the Ninth U.S. Army, investigating the case, gathered evidence to be used at the trial of the accused but found all means of identification removed from the bodies.
