The rise and fall of the Nazi state.
The rise and fall of the Nazi state. Allies and German prisoners cross the Rhine on German Bridge - German prisoners, carrying one of their wounded, cross the Remagen Bridge to the west banks of the Rhine River while Allied soldiers advance to enlarge the already well-stablished Allied beachhead on the east bank. The first Allied crossing of the Rhine, which took place on March 7, 1945, was made over this captured German railroad bridge at Romagen, left intact by the fleeing Germans. Although the bridge later collapsed because of structural weakness resulting from bombdamage, large pontoon bridges had been floated into place and railroad bridges constructed along the river and a steady stream of men and supplies continued to reinforce the rapidly advancing Allied armies.
