American Military Government in Germany. Lieutenant Charles K. Martin (facing camera), Public Safety Officer in Bayreuth's Military Government detachment, inspeccts a squad of auxiliary police, who have replaced the Nazi police force. Lacking uniforms, which have been ordered, the policemen are permitted to carry rifles to preserve law and order among the German civilians. They have no power to arrest or exercise any authority over Allied militar personnel and all actions teken by German police officers with respect to nationals of the United Nations must first be cleared with the Public Safety Officer. The policemen are paid 180 marks a month by the Burgemeister.
