U.S. War workers line up for final pay chechs. Some of the 11,900 employees of the Douglas Aircraft Company plant in Long Beach, in the U.S. Pacific coast state of California, line up for their final pay chechks on August 17, 1945, three days after U.S. President Harry S. Truman annonced Japan's unconditional surrender. On Augusts 18, President Truman ordered full mobilization of all government resources for promotion of swift and orderly reconversion of national economy from war to peacetime footing. Stepts were necessary the Chief Executive siad, to assure general stability of proces and costs and maintenance of purchasing power which are indispensable to shift of business enterprises from wartime to peacetime employment.
