General Eisenhower inspects new Allied Airborne Army.
General Eisenhower inspects new Allied Airborne Army. Staff flags follow the Stars and Stripes during the march past when General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Allied Expeditionary Force, reviewed Allied airborne troops at a ceremony in England August 10, 1944, at which General Eisenhower announced that a new army had been formed, combining all British and U.S. airborne forces, the first of its kind in history. Lieutenant General Lewis H. Brereton, former head of the Ninth U.S. Air Force, is in command with Lieutenant General Frederick A.M. Browning of the British Army as his deputy. Formation of the new army will integrate and make more effective the large airborne forces now at the disposal of the Supreme Allied Command.
