American ambulances at Anzio.
American ambulances at Anzio. The driver of an American Field Service ambulance attached to units of the British Eighth Army in Anzio, Italy, piles earth around his vehicle as a protection from flying shrapnel and shell fragments. The ambulances in this service, most of them gifts from American civilians, are manned by volunteers who serve without pay. In Italy alone, 260 AFS ambulances had, up to May 1, 1944, travelled 1,000,000 miles carrrying wounded troops from front-line dressing stations to field hospitals in the rear. Units of the service were with British and French forces in France, in the Middle East and North Africa and are now with British forces in Burma.
