North American B-25 Soviet pilots ferry U.S. planes from Alaska to Russian fronts. A U.S. officer (second from right), and three Soviet pilots at an airfield in Nome, Alaska, await the arrival of four twin-motored planes from factories in the U.,S. The Soviet airmen will take over the planes after they land, and fly them to Russian fighting fronts. The flyer in the heavy, quilted coat is a Soviet ace holding many decorations. Returned from combat duty, he is one of many veteran pilots in the plane-ferrying service. U.S. Foreign Economic Administrator, Leo T. Crowley, recently announced that up to May 1, 1944, America had supplied her Russian ally with 10,000 planes under Lend-Lease arrangements. Almost half of the number were flown from the U.S. to Russian battlefronts.
