Anna-Maria W. oral history 1983
Anna-Maria was born to a non-Jewish family in Gorinchem, Netherlands. She moved to Dordrecht in 1926 to complete her education and became the secretary for the owner of store. She describes her interactions and friendships with members of the Jewish community. She recalls her marriage on May 7, 1940 three days before the German invasion of the Netherlands. She discusses the political situation and occupation government. She recalls learning about the progress of war by listening to the radio. She describes how a friend had hid a Jewish couple throughout the war without AW's knowledge. She recalls seeing Jewish people leaving for the train station. She describes damage to the city from bombing and lack of food near the end of the war. She describes liberation. She recalls learning about the fate of European Jews and meeting those coming out of hiding and returning from camps.
